The Winged Profile
The grandeur of a place is defined from its gateway and Chennai airport is one among the recently constructed airports that has set a mark with its design catering over 14 million passengers every year which is likely to increase up to 40 million passengers in the near future. Creative group designed the Chennai Airport with a unique concept of winged form of a bird in which twin-curved roofs interspersed with skylights and exposed ceiling with hot bended circular sections were used for the first time in India. The project has a distinction of being a Brownfield project wherein new domestic as well as international terminals were added while retaining the existing terminals at the airport. The mega design of the airport provides a high level of sustainability in all the aspects including restoration of native landscape, passive energy conservation strategies, material selection and onsite water treatment there. The master planning of Chennai Airport was done by the Creative Group which is the first inter-modal hub in the country that connects the domestic and international terminal of the airport with the metro station, railway station and bus stand making the departure as well as arrival hassle free and comfortable for the passengers. With a total site area of 100 Acres, the grand airport has an area of 67,700 Sq.m for the new domestic terminal building and 59,300 Sq.m for the international terminal building.
